What is Counselling Anyway?

Counselling is a form of psychotherapy or “talk therapy”. There are many different forms of counselling and each counsellor will have a personal style.  Counsellors often offer a free call so potential clients can get a feel for whether that counsellor is right for them.

There are many misconceptions about counselling that can prevent people from getting help:

– Sometimes people think that going to a counselling therapist will result in them being judged for their failures. A good counselling therapist should provide quite the opposite experience. For many people, counselling is the single place where they can share themselves without fear of being judged.

– Some people might think they will tell the counsellor their problems and the counsellor will provide a solution.  This is an old idea that the counselling practice has moved away from.  Although counsellors will bring their knowledge and expertise to the counselling session to assist you, no one knows more about you and your life than you do and ultimately you will decide what direction to chose.

– Some people think that there is no point in talking about their problems. Countless studies have shown the effectiveness of psychotherapy in helping with anxiety, depression, and other mental wellness issues.
